Wernher von Braun the Man behind the World war II German V-2 rockets and also Helped to revolutionise the modern U.S.A ballistic missile and space rocket technology.

Wernher von Braun was a German-born American aerospace engineer. Born on March 23rd, 1912 (wirsitz, province of German Empire now Wyrzysk Poland). He was a leading engineer in Nazi rocket technology and U.S space and rocket technology.

Early Life

Von Braun was the 2nd of the 3 sons of the Nobel Lutheran family. His father Magnus frelherr von Braun a civil servant. His mother Emmy von Quistorp was from a royal family.
after you his family moved to Berlin in 1915, his made gave him a telescope, and he developed a passion for astronomy. In 1925 von Braun attended a boarding school at Etteisburg castle near Wiemar, He acquired a copy of Hermann Oberth book (Rocket into planetary space) which spurred his desire to better understand is science.

He enrolled at the Berlin institution of technology in late 1920s. In 1932 studying physics at the University of Berlin. on completing his graduate studies, he conducted in-depth research on rocketry, for which he received a grant from the ordnance department of Germany.
In 1934, von Braun led a group that successfully launched two liquid fueled rocket more than 1.5 mile.

Involvement in Nazism

In 1939 moved to peenemude, a village in north eastern Germany, von Braun worked with dornberger and the rest of his crew to again successfully launched a rocket. The trial caught Adolf Hitler's attention [Germany had started world war II by invading poland.] When von Braun refused to co-operate with Gestapo chief Heinrich, Himmler took over the V-2 project, he was imprisoned. But not after long, was released by Hitler.

The developed an antibiotic aircraft Missile Wasserfall and the ballistic missile A-4, which later became known as the "V-2" meaning "Vengeance Weapon 2". German force began to deploy the V-2 flying missile against Britain in 1994.
Von Braun interest was specifically for space travel a not for killing people. Mort Sahl mocked von Braun by saying. "I aim at the stars, but sometimes I hit London".

Nazi launched hundreds of V-2 missile in his design against Britain and other countries, killing more than 5,000 people, while more than 20,000 German's died building the V-2 rockets. Lately as the allies forces advanced into the heart of Germany, von Braun and his engineering team decided to surrender to the United States.

Living in the United States

Von Braun and some German scientists was moved to the U.S on June 20, 1945. For fifteen years after world war II, Between 1952 and 1956 von Braun led the Army's rocket development team at Redstone Arsenal as part of military operation called project paperclip, which was used for the first live nuclear ballistic missile tests by the U.S.

Von Braun became one of the most important advocates for space exploration in the United States in the 1950s. In 1957 American authorities choose to use von Braun and his German team's experience to create and orbital launch vehicle. As the director of the Development operations Division of the Army Ballistic missile Agency. Von Braun with his team, developed the Jupiter missile and Jupiter-C rocket, which was used to launched the West's first satellite, Explorer 1 on Jan 31, 1958.

The event signaled the birth of the American space program.

As the director of National Aeronautic and Space Administrator Marshall Spaceflight Center. During the Apollo space program, he worked closely with Kurt H Debus the first director of Kennedy space center, which led to the to the development of Saturn V- rocket, Each launch was successful. His dreams to help humans set foot on the moon became a reality on July 16, 1969. After the moon landing he expressed his optimism that the Saturn v carrier system would continue to be developed, advocating human mission to Mars.
In 1970 he was assigned the post of NASA deputy associate administrator for planning at NASA headquarters. But later retired from NASA on may 26, 1972.

DEATH

  • Von Braun received several United States honor's, as well as awards. He is still considered as one of the most important figure in the field of Rocketry and Ballistic Missile in the United States. Von Braun died on June 16, 1977 of pancreatic cancer in Alexandria, Virginia at the age of 65. He was buried at the Ivy Hill cemetery.
